Combustion

Combustion is a basic process of burning, where Oxygen is used and the resultants contain Water and Carbon Dioxide. Methane gas burning would work based on this equation:

2O2 + CH4 => CO2 + 2H2O

Incomplete combustion

Incomplete combustion is when the reaction does not fully take place when there is not enough Oxygen to react with:

2O2 + CH4 => 2CO + 2H2O
O2 + CH4 => C + 2H2O

The products are either raw carbon (C) with water OR carbon monoxide. Incomplete combustion is not wanted because of following reasons:

  1. Less energy is given out
  2. It is pollutant
  3. There are less useful materials given off

Complete combustion

Usually this process happens when there is enough oxygen to react and results are given off as best as possible.
