Cells
Animal cells
Animal cells consist of three main components: nucleus, cytoplasm and cell membrane.
- Nucleus
-
A main component of the cell that contains genetic information and
controls the cell's function and its processses.
- Cytoplasm
-
The biggest part of the cell where reactions take place
- Cell membrane
-
Controls what enters and leaves the cell.
Plant cells
Plant cells are different from animal cells by adding few more components.
- Cell wall
- Supports the shape of the cell
- Chloroplasts
- Contain chlorophyll for light absorption for photosynthesis
- Vacuole
- Contains cell sap and helps support the cell
Other cells
A wide variety of cells that do different functions.
Red blood cell
Red blood cells are contained in the blood and are used to transport oxygen around the body.
It's features:
- Is made up of heamoglobine, which weakly bonds with oxygen for transportation.
- Large surface area - to adopt more oxygen
- Does not have a nucleus - saves space and can easily pass through cells, such as villi
White blood cell
Is used to destroy the microbes that have entered the body.
Works well because it can change the shape.
Root hair cell
Ovum/Egg celll
Contains large amount of reserves before is fertilised for the development of the embryo.
Sperm cell
Has a tail for swimming and is used to fertilise the ovum.
